Our history

Sutton Community Hall has been part of Mumbles life for more than a century, with roots reaching back to the very early days of Scouting itself.

Scouting first arrived in Mumbles in 1909, just two years after the movement was founded. The original All Saints’ Church Boy Scouts met in the cellars of “Glyn Cerrig” on Newton Road, the home of local surgeon Mr Arthur Lloyd Jones. Not long afterwards, the troop became known as the First Mumbles Scout Troop.

In 1921, the Scouts moved to a new headquarters on The Grove: a simple corrugated iron building with a glass-panelled roof, fondly known as “The Scout Shed”. It stood on the site of today’s hall and served generations of young people, clubs and community groups for more than 50 years.

Sutton Hall opened in 1976, giving 1st Mumbles Scout Group a more permanent home and creating a much-loved local venue for meetings, celebrations, activities and performances. Over the years it has welcomed Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, community groups, parties, classes and local events — quietly becoming part of the fabric of Mumbles.

Between 2021 and 2023, the hall underwent a major programme of renovation, supported by grants from Mumbles Community Council, Swansea Council and The National Lottery. Improvements included a renewed roof, modern low-energy lighting, disability access, a disabled toilet and baby change, a new kitchen, refurbished toilets, upgraded flooring, new entrance doors, internal and external decoration, and the replacement of all 21 single-glazed windows with modern double-glazed units.

In 2025, Sutton Hall was renamed Sutton Community Hall to better reflect its role as a welcoming facility for the wider community. Today, it remains proudly connected to 1st Mumbles Scout Group while continuing to serve as a flexible space for local people, clubs, classes, celebrations and events.

From the cellars of Glyn Cerrig to The Scout Shed, and from Sutton Hall to Sutton Community Hall, the building’s story is one of service, friendship and community spirit — a place shaped by generations and ready for many more.
